15 May OG Southeast Asia Begins!
Sa-wat-dee krap family and friends!
After months of prepatation our 14-member Operation Groundswell Southeast Asia Discovery crew has finally arrived in Thailand’s beautiful capital Bangkok; a city that first the phrase “organized chaos” like no other. Cora, Amanda, Matt, Jessica, Robert, Keila, Mike, Kylie, Alex, Sidney, Katie, Marlie, Natania and Fiona are finally united and are all safe and sound!
Day 1 – May 14, 2011
Attempting to keep up with Bangkok’s hustle and bustle, the group split up into three teams and set off on an incredible adventure known as the Great Bangkok Scavenger Hunt. Traveling by foot, zipping around by sky train and cruising over the water by river taxi, the three teams visited some of this city’s most prominent landmarks including Wat Po’s giant sleeping Buddha, the Democracy Monument and Siam Paragon. At the end of the hunt we all got together and described our expriences through discussion, photographs, video clips and best of all, hilarious jingles. Some teams befriended tuk-tuk (taxi) drivers, others recited 1-10 in Thai with ease and all teams pushed their boundaries by tasting some new and exotic flavours and spectacularly colourful fruits. I don’t think any other Discovery crew was as successful on the Great Bangkok Scavenger Hunt as this one…we are shaping up to be an exceptional blend of motivated and fun-loving individuals!
Day 2 – May 15, 2011
Shifting gears, today the OG crew broke away from Kaosan Road (the backpacker’s hub) and stimulated our senses with a visit to JJ market. We were all exposed to an array of sights, sounds, smells and textures. From clothing to animals, to all sorts of delicious foods, to locally made handicrafts, and to phenomenal pieces of artwork, JJ market had something for everyone. Some of us even bumped into the Thai Jack Sparrow – ARRRRRRR! Before retiring to our new temporary home, New Joe Gustehouse, together we will take a stroll around Bangkok’s streets to experience a bit of this city’s nightlife.
After two day of soaking up Bangkok, tomorrow we will spend some time engaging in an introspective activity that will encourage each person to spill out our initial thoughts of their first 48 as well as our expectations of the weeks to come. But we can’t leave Bangkok without receiving an official Thai massage! That’s right, before we make our way to Chiang Mai tomorrow evening, we are going to “pamper” the group with an hour of a relaxing and authentic Thai massage. Indeed, they are in good hands 🙂
That’s all from us for now. The next time you will likely hear from us here on the blog we will have journeyed to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand, a region that will force all of use to reshape our perceptions and definitions of Thailand – something that will surely happen with each passing day (we can’t wait!).
With Love from Bangkok,
OG SEA Dsicovery Crew
