19 May Bienveni en Ayiti!
The group has arrived! All participants are safe and sound after being welcomed by a konpa band at the airport and surviving the craziness that is Haitian customs. In our first two days, we’ve accomplished so much its hard even to recount it all. We started with a whole day of airport pickups which included a welcome to Haiti walk home. After some fun orientation activities, we were treated to a ‘poi’ (fire-spinning) show from several long-term Haiti Communitere volunteers.
On our first full day, everyone worked their butts off, learned how to safely use all the power tools on base, made some Ubuntu Blox and began the stairs up to the roof for the Ubuntu factory.

To finish off our first day, the group packed into a tap-tap (a minibus of sorts) with a bunch of our Haitian friends from Cité Soleil to head to a nearby club described to us as “really Haitian”. Where else would one want to celebrate Haitian Flag Day? No pictures exist from this great night but suffice it to say, booties were shaken and good times were had by all.
Today, participants competed in the Great OG Scavenger Hunt. Teams of two ventured around the neighbourhood, checking out tasks off their lists and getting acquainted with the sights and sounds of Port-au-Prince.
The most difficult task? Get an acrylic nail put on your pinky. Massive points to Emilie!
