The OG Gift Guide 2020

written by OGHQ

If you’re looking for gifts where the thought really counts this year, we’re here to help you find the perfect gift for everyone on your list! Whether it’s a physical gift, a gesture, an experience, something virtual or something else entirely, we’ve got an idea or two for you.

The OG Marketplace was created in response to our network of partners who had so many incredible handmade and one of a kind products but no one to share them with, now that covid-19 has put a temporary pause on travel. Plus, we wanted to find a way to connect the OG community and beyond with the work that these organizations do around the world!

By shopping at the OG Marketplace, you are voting for a transparent and just supply chain and independent artisans, makers, farmers and shakers with your dollars. Thanks for stopping by, and we hope this guide helps you solve a few holiday gift puzzles this year :).

Alma de Colores is a social & labour inclusion organization for folks with disabilities in San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala. Their members handmake jewellery, which we are so excited to showcase on the Marketplace!

The Gift of Giving

While the purchase of any and all of these products contribute to people and organizations who are working towards meaningful change and a more equitable world, there is always the option of simply donating to the ongoing relief efforts for our partners. You can make a contribution on our GoFundMe here, or add a donation to your cart before checking out!

The Spiritual One Who Values Experiences

Jade Nahual Necklace & Mayan Cosmology Chat with Erwin, $56.60
Wood Nahual Necklace & Mayan Cosmology Chat with Erwin, $34.90

This gift is as personal as they come. It’s a Mayan Cosmology package that includes a 15-minute 1 on 1 chat with Erwin Colli Chayax, the Hub Coordinator who is originally from Petén, Guatemala. Erwin holds a wealth of knowledge and passion for preserving Mayan culture and history as well as Mayan cosmology. Based on the recipient’s birth day and year, Erwin will talk to them 1 on 1 about what their Mayan Nahual represents. In addition, they’ll receive a hand-carved jade pendant necklace to match their specific nahual. It’s a gift that blends the joy of experiences and connection across new cultures with a unique piece of jewellery that holds great significance.

The Coffee Lover

Granito Coffee, $16.50-$17.50

This one’s easy – set them up with a bag or two of Granito Coffee! Granito Coffee works with three coffee cooperatives in Guatemala for their single-origin beans grown using organic methods. The beans are then roasted fresh here in Toronto, making for a transparent and ethical supply chain for a commodity that is often neither of those things. And yes, the coffee is delicious.

La Voz 1

The Mom, Teacher, Mentor, or Special Someone who Deserves a Little Luxury

Hand-woven Rayon Scarf, $40.00
Silky Rayon Shawl, $60.00

What clothes do you have, if any, that are completely hand-woven? Yabal’s cooperative of Indigenous Mayan women weavers make each of these pieces by hand using skills and methods passed on for generations. The silky rayon material is light enough for shoulder season wear, and so soft that you’ll want it around you all of the time. Plus, all of their fabrics are dyed using colourfast, natural dyes that reflect the colours and vibrancy of the natural world so you can feel awesome about your gift to a special person and to the earth.

The Nonstop Traveller

Travel Ready Basket, $59.40
OG Giftcard, from $20.00

This little basket packs a big punch for the person on your list who can’t wait to travel! The hand-woven toiletry bag is lined and generously sized to hold the essentials, and the face mask is made with durable materials that will endure the wear and tear of travel. Finally, top it off with the brand new OG neck gaiter and they’ll be ready to hit the ground running!

However, if gifting experiences is more your style, you can always get them an OG gift card to use towards their next program OR their next order on the OG Marketplace. This is an awesome way to give the gift of travel for when it’s safe & responsible to travel again.

Traveler Basket

The Dog-Lover

Textile and leather dog collar, $23.95

For the person who loves their dog to the moon and back, help them celebrate their pooch with this handmade dog collar! Made by Pablo Marroquin in Pastores, Guatemala, this collar is made of leather, woven textiles and metal clasps. Available in XS-XL.

The Foodie or Aspiring Chef

The Backpacktivist’s Food Guide, $10.00+
Home Cooked Adventure Basket, $72.90

As we enter the winter months and prepare to spend more time at home indoors, kit out the food-lover on your list with a hand-woven apron or oven mitten and a digital copy of The Backpacktivist’s Food Guide! The cookbook is chock-full of recipes and stories from OG’s partners around the world, and contains culinary delights you won’t find anywhere else. Plus, all proceeds of The Backpacktivist’s Food Guide go towards OG’s ongoing relief efforts and Community Contributions.

The Art Collector and Environmentalist

Upcycled Wall Art, $130.00

This woven wall art hangs beautifully in any room. Made with natural dyes, the motifs on the art are representative of Mayan culture and tradition and are woven using upcycled plastic bags. It’s hard to explain just how stunning these pieces are, but would make quite the statement in any room.

Build Your Own Gift Basket

Gift Baskets, from ~$30.00

If you know a person inside & out and want to customize a gift that is made just for them, you can also mix & match products on the Marketplace to create your own gift basket! We also have some pre-made bundles available, and if you want to have the bundle delivered with a note simply add one at checkout.

However you choose to give & celebrate, we’re so grateful for the folks who are choosing to support small and independent this year. We love being able to showcase the talents and work of our partners, and we love sharing it with the wider world!

Happy holidays from our family to yours,
