Operation Groundswell teams up with Occupy Sandy

As you are all well aware, Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of the Caribbean as well as the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States in late October and its effects continue to affect many lives. Operation Groundswell is teaming up with Occupy Sandy to support the relief effort for neighborhoods and people affected by this natural disaster. If you are in the Northeastern area the United States, we would greatly appreciate your contributions in this effort. Read below for more information and/or contact Jo Sorrentino at [email protected] or on her mobile at 443-480-2776. The last day to sign up is November 12.

Occupy Sandy is a coalition of people and organizations who are dedicated to implementing aid and establishing hubs for neighborhood resource distribution. Members of this coalition are from Occupy Wall Street, 350.org, recovers.org and many individual volunteers. Operation Groundswell staff and alumni are on the ground ready to support the relief effort in any way possible.

We will be given specific task(s) to work on once we arrive on site. The progress on the ground is constantly changing and relies heavily on weather and volunteer attendance day-to-day. A likely task will be distribute supplies to various affected neighborhoods. We also hope to make and distribute grilled cheese sandwiches for the volunteers and victims of Sandy while we are down there. That said we will focus our efforts on where they are needed most!

Help is always needed! But we are ideally looking for those who can commit to volunteering for multiple days. A weekend is good, an entire week is great.

OG will be heading down on November 16th through November 18th for a weekend of community service.

We will find accommodations depending on the number of people we have signed up to help. Our accommodations will be warm and livable, but we have no other guarantees. Expect to bring a sleeping pad and a warm sleeping bag.
